Let me tell you a little about myself. My name is Michael Jenkins, but I prefer Pastor Mike. I have been the senior pastor here at FBC for going on 5years now. I serves with my wonderful wife of over 20 years, Dana, and four sons. We also have a baby girl on the way.
My testimony is extensive and somewhat unique. Not growing up in a “church going” home, I chose atheism as my worldview. I enjoyed reading atheist philosophers and writers who spoke against the Christian faith. Even during my time in first Gulf War, I believed religion, especially Christianity, was for the “weak minded.” It was well after I left the Marines and ran my own company that I had a “Damascus Road” conversion. I had ran my company the way that ran my life: my way…and both went straight to hell. During this very dark time in my life, God touched my heart, and I released my hatred towards Him and His people. I started following Jesus as my Lord. I inhaled scripture and, as promised by Jesus, my life changed.
I believe God has given me the spiritual gift of leadership and preaching—both extremely important to the pastoral ministry. My model of servant leadership is Jesus Christ.
Jesus was first and foremost a servant. He knew God’s will for His life and He served the mission God gave Him. He was a leader in the sense that He recruited others to the vision that God gave Him and communicated that vision. He led by example. He also served those He led by equipping them, as He continues to equip us today! That’s what servant leaders do. Serve God, recruit others, communicate the vision, and serve others by equipping them. My call is to equip others and see them thrive and succeed in their God given purpose.
The vision as I see it for FBC of Farmer City is that we will be a Great Commission Church. We WORSHIP our God. We will WIN people to Christ. We will CONNECT people to the body of believers. We will DISCIPLE Christians. And we will SEND them out.
As to the ministry of preaching, I love to proclaim the Word of God. Again, I did not grow up in the church, and I never really had how a preacher was supposed to preach imbedded in my psyche. My approach has been described as “informal (and) non-stuffy.” I will never waver from God’s Word. I believe that all Scripture is from God. It is complete. And it must be proclaimed in its entirety. This website has hundreds of my messages archived and I invite you to take a listen.
I’m very passionate about helping the community that our church is a part of. I believe Christians should be the catalyst for real and tangible change. Jesus’ primary mission is eternal in nature, and that’s my primary concern. However, Jesus did not neglect the physical. He did care for the poor, the hurt, the destitute, and the rest of the multitudes. We must do the same.
If you have any questions about Christ, the vision/mission, the church, or whatever…I invite you to shoot me an e-mail or give me a call.
Lastly, I would like to personally invite you to FBC of Farmer City. To say that I love this church and this community would be an understatement. To say that we’re perfect would be a lie. In fact, if you’re perfect, I’d encourage you not to try us out. I can never live up to perfect people’s standards. On the other hand, if you’re not a perfect person who’d like to experience a community of believers in love with the Lord and each other, trying to make our little place in the world a little better than we found it, why don’t you give us a try? We’d love to meet you!
See you soon!
In Christ,
Pastor Mike
